Announcements

  • Extra support for those not receiving logins is now available. If you register through this page and do not receive your login after one week, please email us. Please include your major and which CS class you are currently taking (course and section).
  • Please do not request Additional Downloads. MSDNAA as currently implemented in the CS Department simply does not have the capability to grant these requests. We understand the frustration when your hard drive crashes or your download does not complete, but we cannot give Additional Downloads. Please understand the risks involved in using this program. This is a free service provided for the personal enrichment of students. Please get the most out of it that you can.
  • We have a nice FAQs section. Take a look before emailing, your answer is probably there (everyone else's is).

Steps to get software

In order to get this software for your own use, there are some steps to take:
  1. Register. At the bottom of this site is the registration form. By entering your information here, the CS department will then check the information against what is has, and if they verify that you are taking at least one CS class for credit will submit your information to the MSDNAA Software Center.
  2. Once the MSDNAA Software Center gets your informaiton from the CS department they will email you your login to download software. Our MSDNAA Software Center site is here. From this site, anyone can see what products we currently have available.
  3. Once registered with MSDNAA, you can download a number of product downloaders from them. These small programs come from the Software Center site, and enable the downloading of the full program. You must use Internet Explorer to download software.
  4. Product Download. Executing the downloader will begin a dowload from http://code.cs.byu.edu. This is a server in the CS department at BYU, and contains encrypted copies of the MSDNAA software. The downloader will simultaneously stream, decrypt, and save the product. If the downloader ever asks about installation, it really means the installation of the sutff you're downloading (installation of ISOs or installation of installation programs). The downloads can be quite lengthy, so before you start be sure you’re in a position to finish. You only get one download per product.
  5. Product Installation and Enjoyment. Once downloaded, the software can be installed or burned to CD and later installed (depending on the type of software selected).

Support Policy

This is a document given to us by the CS department. As site administrators, this is what kind of support you can expect. If you have questions about the service, or suggestions, we (as the Site Administrators) can answer questions, but we have no power to really do anything. Here is the document as given to us by the department:

MSDNAA Support Policy

PLEASE READ!!! The following is important information about what you can expect (or not expect) when participating in the MSDNAA program.

We do not have resources to provide support for individual users of MSDNAA. You may feel it unacceptable for us to participate in the program without providing support. However, the only alternative is to not provide the program. We feel it is better to have the program available with no support rather than not have the program available.

When you register for MSDNAA, the information you enter is verified against BYU enrollment records using an automated script. Your email address must match the address BYU has on record for you. If you have changed your email address with BYU, registration may fail. If you enrolled in some non-standard way (adding classes late for example), registration may fail. If your registration fails, we cannot help you! We do not have resources to provide support for individual users.

When you use MSDNAA to download software your download may fail. If your download fails, we cannot help you!

After you have downloaded a software product from MSDNAA you may have problems installing the product. If you have problems installing the product, we cannot help you!

Remember you are not paying for this service. This is not an entitlement. This is an extra benefit we are trying our best to make available to you given the limited resources we have available.

That was the document we got from the CS department. This is a list of some, but not all, of the the things that we cannot do:
  • Process your request by any means other than the form below.
  • Re-send login information*
  • Grant requests for additional downloads
*Though we cannot re-send login information, the Software Center people can. If you had your login information sent to you, then the lost password form should help you.

If you added classes after the first day of school, or changed your Route-Y email address within the past 6 months, be sure to keep your email address constant, register early and try again next semester.

ADDENDUM
Extra support for failed registrations is now available. If you register through this page and do not receive your login after one week, please email us. Please include your major and which CS class you are currently taking (course and section).

FAQs

Q: I put in my information, and I haven't heard back from you. What's wrong?
A: Well, you probably gave us invalid data. The BYU CS department doesn't inform you if you were denied, so that's probably what happened. If you've changed your Route Y email address, then you've got a problem. If you have added or dropped all of your CS classes, then that could be another problem.

Q: I put in all the information, I'm sure its correct, but I still didn't get a confirmation.
A: I'm sorry, but what probably happened is some event beyond our control. The system is really very picky. It is possible though that you did get successfully registered, but you didn't get a confirmation from the MSDNAA Software Center. If this is the case then you may actually be registered. This doesn't happen very often, and we don't have any way of checking this, but we know that it has happened a few times. To check if this is the case for you, try the following:
  1. Browse to the MSDNAA login page (http://msdn07.e-academy.com/byu_cs/)
  2. Click on "LOG IN"
  3. Click on "Forgot Password"
  4. Enter your email address into the "Username" box.
  5. Click on "LOG IN"
  6. Click on "Go Find It"
The system will either say your email address was not found (in which case your registration really did fail) or the system will send your account information to your email address.
  7. Check your email
If you try this and it shows that your registration failed, then please email us. Please include your major and which CS class you are currently taking (course and section).

Q: I would like to request an additional download of [insert title here]. Is there any way that I could get another one?
A: Sorry, Due to our current support policy, we are currently unable to grant requests for additional downloads.

Q: MSDNAA makes it possible for member departments to have a CD checkout system. Is that available?
A: Sorry, Due to our current support policy, we are currently unable to provide provisions for CD checkout.

Q: I'm running Linux (or Mac), all I was able to download was a Windows .exe file. How am I supposed to get the software? (Or I'm using Mozilla, and can't download the downloader, what can I do?)
A: Sorry, but this is Microsoft's system, they've decided how stuff gets done, and all programs are either Windows OSs or programs for Windows OSs. Linux and Mac versions are not available. If you want a copy anyway, find a friend with a CD burner and Windows, and have him make a copy for you. Or don't some of the machines in the CS department have CD burners? Or Get a windows emulator for your machine, and run the executable. It really isn't that complicated of a file, most emulators should be able to handle it. Also some have experienced difficulties downloading in Mozilla. Try using IE.

Q: It's asking for a product key. Where am I supposed to get it?
A: Well, there's three options. The link in the MSDNAA Software Center that allows you to download the downloader also has the product key on it. If you are past that point, then you can go back and try to download it again if you want to. Another option is that the MSDNAA Software Center sent you an email. That email should have the product key on it. If you deleted the email and downloaded the product a while ago, then the easisest option is to: Login to the MSDNAA Software Center, select "My Products" from the left sidebar. Select the product you want the Product Key for, then it should be on that screen.

Q: I'm having trouble installing [insert product]. Can you tell me what's wrong?
A: Sorry, but due to our support policy, we are unable to help with installing or troubleshooting products.

Q: I had an account with the MSDNAA Software Center, but now I don't, what's going on?
A: Because of the requirement that students be currently enrolled in a CS class, the department suspends all MSDNAA accounts at the end of each semester. To reactivate your account, use the same registration form you used to sign up.

Q: I forgot my logon information at the MSDNAA Software Center. Can you get it back for me?
A: Though we cannot re-send login information, the MSDNAA Software Center people can. If you had your login information sent to you, then the MSDNAA Software Center lost password form should help you.

Q: Why don't you have [insert software title] available for download?
A: Because of the overhead in encrypting the ISO images and other downloads, we are only making availbale for download the products that the MSDNAA Software Center has pre-encrypted (the high-traffic items). This does include a vast array of products, but doesn't include legacy software (older versions of Windows), or beta titles. If there is something that you do want us to include, please let us know.

Q: I'm a computer science major, and I'm not taking classes during summer [or another semester]. Can I get access while I'm not taking classes?
A: Sorry, but the MSDNAA program requires that you are currently taking CS classes, so if you aren't taking any CS classes this semester (even if you are a CS major and are registered for classes the subsequent semester), then you can't be given access.
